Flipping the Script:
Changing Your Perspective When You Can’t Change Your Situation
It’s a truth universally acknowledged that some days are just straight up crappy. It’s another truth that some situations or sets of circumstances can leave us confused, dejected, exhausted, or even depressed if they persist or seem unchangeable. But what I have also noticed to be (fairly) universally true is that, oftentimes, a change in attitude or perspective makes all the difference. Maybe you’ve noticed this, too? How, sometimes, when we cannot change our circumstances, we need to change our way of thinking. Essentially, we need to flip the script.
Friends, in my experience, there comes a time when we need to take our proverbial script and turn it on its ear. You know, all of those words and scenarios that tell us what we supposed to be, or think, or do? Well, whether we’ve written them in our own heads or the world has written them for us, it is A-OK to change it up. Do you want to be in a better mental space about certain issues or situations? Then, sweetie, flip the script.
Maybe, for you, it is starting school virtually or working from home. Or, it could be body image or aging. Maybe you find yourself attaching a moral value to things like food or weight or clothes. Whatever it is that is really troubling you or sticking in your craw right now, I want you to ask yourself this question:
How can I flip the script on that?
In other words, How can I change how I think about these things when I can’t change the things themselves? What words or thoughts or practices do I have the power to amend so I feel less stuck?
Over the next few weeks, I’m going to share some of the ways this practice is working in my life. There’ve been some real revelations and “aha moments” that have helped me and I’d love to share them with you. And what’s more, is I’d love it if you’d share with me, too!
Is there something in your life that has been made better by flipping the script?
Or…
Is there an area of your life where you’d love to flip the script, but maybe can’t figure out how?
Either way, let me know!
Now, I’ll be real honest. You all know I’m not a counselor or a therapist. I readily admit that I know less than nothing about those things. But I am a wife of 20+years, a mom of (almost) three teenagers, and a woman in my 40s. I’m about as practical as practical gets. And while I I won’t come close to claiming to know everything, as the insurance jingle goes, “I know a thing or two ’cause I’ve seen a thing or two.” And you? You do, too. So work with me and let’s give this a try, shall we?
Finally, let me just say that this whole flip the script concept isn’t some silly Pollyanna approach to life. It’s not one where we just tell each other to find something to be glad about. It is, however, a way of looking at things from all angles to find a new way to think or act that will most benefit our mental, emotional, and perhaps even physical or spiritual self. And that’s kind of the goal, isn’t it?
I can’t wait to share more with you soon and to have you join me on this adventure! Feel free to comment below or to message me on either Facebook or Instagram!
I’m with you! Let’s think on the truth of God’s promises!
